ProZ Conference

The translators conference on machine translation (MT) has come to an end. As you can see in the program, there is a number of interesting speakers that have given a valuable insight into current trends in machine translation.

Our CEO opened the conference with this presentation on the past, present, and future of MT, and closed it with a round table with all the speakers. The main conclusions have been the following:

  1. MT is here to stay. Translators shall try it and decide how it suits within their workflow to reduce delivery time and costs. Only about 16% of the attendees had previously used MT for professional reasons, but all of them were interested.
  2. MT will not replace professional translators, actually it is a tool to increase productivity and earn more money. Everyone is scared about innovation and how it will impact our daily work. Maybe the solution is not to be afraid, and try to look for the path many people do not follow. Interesting ideas were proposed.
  3. There is a wide variety of solutions in the market, although a generic options such as the one provided in Trados Studio 2009 might not be the most adequate one for obtaining good quality. You shall take into account the languages and the domains you deal with to choose the better solution.

More feedback is welcome, since it is always interesting to exchange information and opinions with people that are specialists within their fields.

This 2-day conference has helped us define our future offerings to the translation community.
